Goodman Calls for Release of Torture Memo
Lee Goodman, Democratic candidate for Congress from the 10th District of Illinois, called upon President Bush to release the memo received from Attorney General John Ashcroft regarding the torturing of prisoners. In testimony before the Senate, Ashcroft admitted sending the memo, which advised the President that torture was legal, but he refused to show it to the Senate or to reporters. He also refused to explain his basis for refusing.
Goodman, an attorney, is an expert on legal evidence and has written two books on the subject for lawyers. "There is no reason whatsoever not to make the memo public at this time," said Goodman. "A legal memo doesn't contain anything that could jeopardize our troops. The only thing that could be hurt by the memo's release is the President's reelection campaign. The Bush White House is looking more like the Nixon White House every day."
